Gabriella Montez is the main female character in High School Musical and its subsequent sequels. She is portrayed by Vanessa Anne Hudgens. She is the daughter of her mother who works for a seemingly large company and a father whose identity remains unknown. She is Troy Bolton' s girlfriend and Taylor McKessie' s best friend. She is shown to be an academic protege extremely accomplished in mathematics and science. She chose to take college at Stanford University located at Stanford, California which is 1053 miles away from Albuquerque.

[edit] Early Life
Gabriella is the daughter of an unnamed mother and father. She has been moving from place to place due to her mother's career and has never stayed in any one place for about four years before the events of High School Musical. Gabriella mentions her father once in HSM3 on the rooftop garden of the school with Troy. Troy asks her to prom and the theme of prom is The Last Waltz. Troy asks Gabriella, "Do you think we will have to waltz?" Gabriella then mentions her father taught her when she was a little girl. Gabriella then proceeds to teach Troy how to do a waltz.

By the time of High School Musical, Gabriella was still very shy and reluctant to go to the New Years Teen Party her her mom makes her go to. However she meets Troy Bolton during a karaoke contest the New Year's Eve Party. The two are then pressured to sing a song, Start of Something New where they both start to fall for each other. As the countdown to new years eve started they both said their goodbyes and gave each other their phone numbers. Although they were supposed to meet later the next day, Troy was forced to leave the first thing in the morning. After winter break, she goes to East High because of her mom's job and is afraid of her new suroundings, thinking that she will be the "Freaky Math Girl" instead of her own person.
In homeroom, of her 1st day, Gabriella, along with Troy, Taylor, Chad, Sharpay and Ryan, get detention for disrupting the class as Troy realizes Gabriella's at East High. Troy meets up with Gabriella after class and they both are very excited to be together again. Troy then gives her a tour of East High and are then interrupted by Sharpay.
Troy and Gabriella start to fall in love, and they sign up together for the Winter Musical, but when Taylor and the science club show her the video of Troy yelling to his friends that he won't do the musical (after being put under pressure and only to shut his friends up), she's heartbroken. After Troy learns why she won't talk to him, he sneaks up a tree on her back porch, where he sings part of the song they sang on New Year's Eve, reminding her that "it's a pairs audition" "(Start of Something New (Reprise))". She starts to like him again.
When she and Troy do their callback, she's nervous at first, but with help from Troy, they give an unbelievable performance of the song Breaking Free, and she wins the role of Minnie in the winter musical eventually with the help of the basketball team and the decathalon team, and Troy wins the role of Arnold despite the efforts of the evil Evans twins - Ryan and Sharpay. She's one of the smartest girls at East High who eventually helps, the science club win the science decathalon, giving them lessons on acids and alkalis on a high level.

In High School Musical 2, she and Troy are revealed to be a couple. She takes a job as a lifeguard at Lava Springs Country Club and plans to spend her summer with Troy. In the kitchen at Lava Springs, she helps Troy convince the other Wildcats that they should stick together no matter what "(Work This Out)". Kelsi Nielsen writes them a duet for the talent show titled You Are the Music In Me. However, she sees the way he acts when Sharpay keeps dumping in his lap and begins to question her trust in him. To get closer to him, Sharpay pretends she can't play golf so Troy can fall for her. Taylor, Gabriella and Chad watch this. She becomes increasingly distrustful of Troy due to him blowing off his friends and missing their dates. When she finds out about Sharpay not allowing her and her fellow wildcats to perform at the talent show, she breaks up with Troy saying that although she will miss him, she cannot stay and have her summer ruined and quits her job at Lava Springs through her eleven o'clock number "(Gotta Go My Own Way)" leaving Troy speechless and brokenhearted. She unexpectedly returns to Lava Springs during the talent show to sing Everyday with Troy and the rest of the Wildcats. She gets back together with Troy after the talent show and they share a romantic kiss. They all preform a closing song All For One by the Lava Springs pool.

In High School Musical 3: Senior Year, she started in the song Now Or Never, in the competition of East High to support Troy, and later, in the movie, she was admitted to go to Stanford University, a school that Gabriella and her mother had been talking about since she was born. However, she says it was embarrassing that her mom wouldn't stop talking about it. Troy, however, said it's just because her mother's proud of her.
Later, she sang with all the cast, A Night To Remember (before this, she was Sharpay's maid in the song I Want It All, but she didn't sing all she did is say "It's Oprah calling...again. She wants you on the show...They're gonna have to get back to you"), and when she teaches Troy how to waltz, they sing Can I Have This Dance?, also, she practiced with Troy to sing Just Want To Be With You, and in a Exclusive Clips: High School Musical 3, when she says "good-bye".
But after saying good-bye to Troy, she sang Walk Away mourning her trip to Stanford, far from her friends and flame. She initially wanted to leave early, with no goodbyes, and not come back for prom or the graduation ceremony, going so far as to say good-bye to troy over the phone right after revealing to him that she loved him. However Troy convinced her to spend her last days at East High with the Wildcats and him "(Can I Have This Dance? (Reprise))" they then shared a kiss. For this, she performed with Troy in the second part of Senior Year Spring Musical, and performed the song Just Want To Be With You (Reprise).
After the musical, Troy finally decides to go to a University of California, Berkeley, which is 32.7 miles from Stanford, and Gabriella is pleased that they won't be a calculated 1053 miles apart. And in the final scene, she attended her graduating ceremony from East High and at last performed the song High School Musical along her fellow wildcats.
[edit] Personality and Traits
Gabriella usually exhibits a very friendly attitude and nice personality to those she considers friends and virtually anyone who approaches her. She is considerably shy and usually doesn't like to be in the spotlight. She dreads it when she is labeled as the "Freaky Math Girl" and in High School Musical is shown to be a bookworm and as well as an academic protege. Although well mannered and not having a bad temper she can't however tolerate people controlling and ruining her personal plans as she clearly exhibited in High School Musical 2. She has a love for singing which was not fully realized until the events of High School Musical, though she did state that she had been part of her local church's choir. She had also suffered from stage fright. She is considered very attractive as she was able to catch Troy' s eye the first time they met as well as having Ryan develop a crush on her in High School Musical 2. She is also very sensitive and though sensible would choose to leave any problems in her social life behind rather than face them as she cannot deal with being emotionally scarred. It is hinted that this may be due to her mother having to constantly relocate them. high school musical is brill.

Gabriella has shown to be a talented singer as well as being extremely intelligent. Her academic performance is so impressive that Stanford University had taken notice of her even before she had graduated from East High School. She is also a competent dancer and when required, an accomplished performer. She also has impressive computer skills as she and Taylor were able to slice into the East High School mainframe to disrupt both her and Troy' s championships. She also has first aid training and is a model student.
[edit] Relationship with Troy
Gabriella and Troy met when forced to sing together at a New Years Eve party. At first Gabriella was scared but after Troy started singing she decided to sing too and the two had a great time and became friends. They spent the rest of the night together until the fireworks went off at midnight and exchanged numbers before going their separate ways. Gabriella was surprised to find she went to the same school as Troy when she moved to New Mexico and they continued their friendship there despite being in different social circles. There singing debut caused Troy to consider whether or not to sing in the musical and Gabriella to consider it too. When Gabriella decided to do it, Troy joined her despite having misgivings just to give her a chance. After they got a callback and everyone learned of it, the two recived pressure from their friends to not do it. They decided to do the callback and their friends tricked them to stop them. When Gabriella thought Troy thought little of her as a result, she was devastated and sang When There Was Me and You, indicating she had deeper feelings for him than just friends. Gabriella was so devastated by what happened that she basicaly stopped interacting with people not knowing that Troy was the same. Chad and Taylor eventually told them both the truth (with Taylor hinting she possibly had an inkling of Gabriella's real feelings for Troy as she said that how Gabriella felt about her friends "and even more, Troy" was what really mattered) but Gabriella was just too hurt to believe them, and had her mom lie to Troy when he came by to see her after finding out the truth from Chad, Zeke and Jason. However, when he called her, Gabriella took his call and the two made up and seemed to become closer friends then ever. The two ended up uniting most of the school when Sharpay and Ryan plotted against them and Troy was able to break through Gabriella's stage fright. After winning the callback, the big game and the championship, Troy nearly kissed her, but was interrupted by Chad and then Taylor.
At some point in between High School Musical and High School Musical 2, Gabriella started to date Troy and was looking forward to a summer with him, the first summer she got to spend in one place. The two had a date on the golf course where they nearly kissed, but got interrupted by the sprinklers which were activated, unknown to them, on Sharpay and Ryan's orders. However, as time went on, Troy started to spend more time with Sharpay and Gabriella got noticeably jealous. Troy started arriving late at dates and even skipping them. Gabriella ended up having enough and after telling Sharpay off, broke up with a stunned and brokenhearted Troy. This and the way he was treating his friends caused Troy to tell off Sharpay and reconcile with his friends who heard about what Troy did from Kelsi who witnessed it. They apparently told Gabriella about it too and she came back and surprised Troy by singing with him at the talent show when he thought he was going to be singing with Sharpay. Later, the two kissed on the golf course, boyfriend and girlfriend once again.
Several months later the two were still dating and seemed to be in a serious relationship. When Troy was winded during the championship game, Gabriella's support allowed him to keep playing and ultimately win. Gabriella later expressed worries about their relationship as they were going to be going to college over a thousand miles apart and a long-distance relationship wouldn't be easy. Troy ended up asking her to prom (which from what they both said was the first time they'd really ever gone to a dance together or alone) and she taught him how to waltz on the rooftop of the school. When Gabriella learned that she could go to Stanford early, she didn't want to and only told Taylor as she didn't want to be separated from Troy for as long as possible. She was also the only one Troy confessed to about seriously considering Julliard and other colleges that were scouting him and not U of A which his father wanted him to go to. When Troy learned about her being picked for early admissions to Stanford, his support was what convinced her to go ultimately, but it was too hard for her to say goodbye to his face and she left without a word although still planning to come back for prom and graduation. After two weeks apart Gabriella called Troy to tell him she wasn't coming back. It was just too hard for her and after she admitted she loved him (the first and only time either of them did that on-screen), she broke up with him without even giving him a chance to reply. She is later surprised when Troy shows up on prom night to be with her. His explanation is that if he's going to have a last dance in high school, it would be with her. They enjoy a dance and Troy convinces her to come back for the musical. At the end of the musical, Troy reveals that he is going to UC Berkley to study basketball and theater...but most importantly to be only 32.7 miles from her so they can continue their relationship. Gabriella is touched by this. After graduating, the two head off to college, still together.
